Battlefield Tours
Turn a name, a photograph or a family story into something much more personal.
If you have a relative who served on the Western Front, I can research their story and create a private battlefield tour around the places connected to their service.
Using service records, battalion war diaries, trench maps and other historical sources, I'll piece together as much of their story as possible before you arrive.
1. Tell me what you know
Send me the soldier's name and any information, photographs or documents you already have. Don't worry if you know very little — sometimes a name and a few details are enough to get started.
2. I research the story
Before your visit, I'll research the available records and build a picture of the soldier's service and the movements of his unit.
4. We follow in their footsteps
On the day, we'll visit the places connected to the story and explore what happened there.
3. I create your itinerary
I'll use that research to plan a route connecting his story with the wider events of the war.
How it works
Every soldier's story is different. Depending on the surviving records, research might help us identify where his unit fought, the trenches or positions they occupied, where he was wounded or killed, nearby dressing stations, cemeteries and memorials, or places where his battalion rested and trained behind the lines.
