Frequently Asked Questions
How much walking is involved?
Very little. Most locations are just a short walk from where we park, and the pace is relaxed. If you have any mobility concerns, please let me know when booking. I will happily tailor the tour to suit your needs, ensuring you can enjoy the experience comfortably.
Can children come on the tour?
Absolutely. Families are very welcome.
The tours cover the realities of the First World War, so some topics can be emotional or upsetting. I always adapt my approach to suit the age of younger visitors and aim to make the history engaging without losing sight of its significance.
Where do you collect guests from?
For tours based around Ypres, I can collect you from your accommodation in Ypres or the train station.
For longer private tours further afield, collection can be arranged from a mutually agreed location. Just get in touch before your tour, and we'll make a plan that works for you.
Are the tours suitable for older visitors?
Yes. Many of my guests are retired, and the tours are designed to be relaxed and enjoyable.
There is no rush, and I am always happy to adjust the pace, walking distances and itinerary to suit your comfort.
What should I wear?
Comfortable clothing and sturdy shoes are recommended. Most of the terrain is easy to walk on, although some cemeteries, memorials and battlefield sites can become muddy after rain.
The weather in Belgium can change quickly, so bringing a waterproof jacket is always a good idea.
Can I visit a relative's grave or battlefield?
Absolutely—and these are often the most memorable tours I offer.
If possible, let me know in advance who you are researching. This gives me time to plan the itinerary and, where appropriate, carry out some additional research so we can make the visit as personal and meaningful as possible.
What happens if it rains?
The tour will still go ahead. Belgian weather can be unpredictable, but that's all part of the experience!
I carry umbrellas in the vehicle, and if the rain becomes particularly heavy, we can always take shelter in the comfort of the van before continuing.
After all, if the soldiers endured the weather, I think we can manage a little Belgian rain too.
How long are the tours?
Tours range from 3½ hours to multiple days, depending on the experience you're looking for.
Whether you're visiting for a morning, a full day, or planning a longer battlefield journey, I can help create an itinerary that makes the most of your time.
Are museum entrance fees included?
Yes—if a museum visit is included as part of your tour itinerary, the entrance fee is included in the tour price.
If you're unsure whether a particular museum is included in your chosen tour, please don't hesitate to ask before booking.
Can you create a personalised tour based on my family member's service?
This is one of my specialities. If you can provide your relative's name, service number or regiment before your visit, I will do my best to research their story and incorporate the places connected to their service into your tour.
Do I need to know anything about the First World War before booking?
Not at all. Whether you're completely new to the history or have been studying it for years, I tailor each tour to your level of knowledge and interests.
